Interacting with Biology at its Most Basic Levels — Atomic and Molecular Physics

Physicians and researchers struggle to create materials that deliver needed performance when used within the human body. Some of those materials have been successful; many others have fallen short.

To create these needed capabilities, Chameleon applies the principles of molecular physics. By interacting with human biology at the atomic and molecular levels, Chameleon can control the interaction between materials and the human body. Chameleon creates surfaces on a broad range of FDA-approved materials:

  • Metals, such as gold, titanium, CoCrMo, NiTiNol and 316L Stainless
  • Polymers such as polyurethane, UHMWPE, Silicone and PEEK, PTFE, PP
  • Ceramics and glasses
  • Collagen and selected biological surfaces

For example, using its Molecular Surface ModificationSM technologies, Chameleon can design the surface of a titanium implant so that bone cells attach as if the titanium were part of the body. In addition, Chameleon can accelerate that attachment and bone growth by delivering Bone Morphogenic Proteins from that same titanium surface.

Chameleon works with leading medical device companies and academic research institutions around the world to apply its surface capabilities to both existing and new medical devices.

Capabilities in 6 Important Areas

Anti-microbial Surfaces
Chameleon provides "tunable" antimicrobial capability. The strength of a product's anti-microbial activity and length of effectiveness can be tailored to address specific bacterial challenges.

Cell Attachment
Chameleon modifies the surfaces of metals, polymers, ceramics and other materials to facilitate the attachment of numerous kinds of cells.

Prevent Cell Attachment
Chameleon creates surfaces that reduce or prevent cells from attaching. For example, pacemaker lead replacement can be significantly simplified by reducing cell attachment.

Drug Eluting Surfaces
Chameleon provides elution of drugs directly from surfaces. For example, the surface of stents can be designed to deliver drugs without the complications of polymers or other carriers.

Immobilize Active Biologicals
Chameleon can immobilize proteins, peptides, growth factors and other active biological to manage the body’s response to injury, surgery or placement of an implant.

Other Specialty and Combination Capabilities
Chameleon can deliver a broad range of specialty surface capabilities from filtration to surface sealing to color coding. It can also combine multiple surface capabilities on a single implant to deliver broad therapeutic control.
